Sal Chen's performance piece, “Living Altar Offering: Seeds for the Stupa,” was a meditative ritual honoring the land, the temple, and the wisdom of the monks. As participants walked around the stupa, Chen painted with ink on twelve long strips of paper that branched out from the structure's center, symbolizing the interconnectedness of all beings and the growth of relationships. The use of time as a medium conveyed the gradual nurturing of these connections, embodying the cyclical nature of existence. Chen’s performance took place simultaneously with Whitney Mallett's poetry reading and a walking meditation at the highest point of the temple property, enhancing the collective sense of ritual and presence.
