Bacon Displacement

Amy Yao

Amy Yao's installation at Ontopo's Tulum retreat in 2018 utilized freshly cooked bacon, arranged both in the sand and on found materials scattered around the site. The work captured an ephemeral sense of contrast between the organic, edible material and the detritus—an interplay between the visceral and the discarded. The bacon, deliberately positioned in this transient environment, acted as both an ironic commentary and an evocative exploration of consumption, displacement, and the encroaching effects of gentrification in the surrounding context of Tulum.
