Ryan Lee Presents

Juri Onuki is a Japanese an artist working primarily in performance as a dancer and choreographer. She is a former student of Merce Cunningham and she currently lives and works in New York City. Her performative contribution to this series will play off of expatriate views of Japan. Seen from a distance and within the framework of shifting cultural norms within the United States and the acceptance or rejection of traditional power structures.  

The focal point will be an approach that posits zen philosophy as a stabilizing mechanism for Japanese Americans after world war 2. In this endeavor, the artist will explore Japanese American identity politics by performing everyday gestures and movements based on Miyasaki’s work installed in the gallery.
